History
The name 'Fingal' (Phin Gall) comes from Ireland and means 'long white man'. Irish settler James Grant apparently named it in 1821 but origins are disputed. Talbot Street was named after William Talbot from Ireland who was granted land and convict workers in 1824 to create and run a farming estate which he named Malahide after the Talbot family castle in Ireland.
The hotel was once named 'St Andrews Inn', then 'The Talbot Arms' and after numerous publicans, Ray Tatlow in 1967 extended the hotel creating two new side wings, new bars and extra accommodation, which is how it remains today.
'The Stables' (the original pub) are sandstone and mud stone containing fossils in the sandy mortar. A dog kennel is built into the staircase next to the entrance of the storehouse where a mastiff was once chained to protect the precious alcohol.
